Did you catch our poll on Tuesday?
We asked which of the following is an offence under the UK Bribery Act 2010? 96% of you got the correct answer: all of the above ✔️
So, what’s the difference between bribery and corruption?
Corruption is the abuse of entrusted power for private gain. It distorts markets and weakens democracy. Corruption offences cover a broad and complex landscape of wrongdoing including:
➡️ Bribery
➡️ Misconduct in public office
➡️ Theft by embezzlement
At the SFO, we investigate and prosecute cases of bribery and corruption, as well as fraud. Most of our corruption cases are now prosecuted under the Bribery Act 2010, but where the offending took place before 2010, we can still prosecute it under the Prevention of Corruption Act 1906.
Here are some notable bribery and corruption results we have achieved:
🚗 Rolls-Royce plc: Rolls-Royce agreed to a £497 million Deferred Prosecution Agreement (DPA) with the SFO in 2017 after our investigation revealed systemic bribery and corruption over decades across the globe.
✈️ Airbus: The SFO secured a landmark DPA with Airbus in 2020, resulting in a €991 million fine as part of a global settlement for the company’s involvement in bribery across multiple countries.
💰 GPT Special Project Management: In 2021, GPT pleaded guilty to corruption charges related to contracts with the Saudi Arabian National Guard. The company was ordered to pay a total penalty of almost £30 million.
Our work is essential to maintaining the UK’s reputation as a safe place to do business.
